Transtorno de ansiedade social é caracterizado por medo ou ansiedade proeminentes e excessivos que ocorrem de forma consistente em uma ou mais situações sociais como interações sociais (p. ex., ter uma conversa), fazer algo enquanto se sente observado (p. ex., comer ou beber na presença de outros) ou se apresentar na frente de outros (p. ex., fazer um discurso). O indivíduo fica preocupado de que vá agir de maneira tal, ou mostrar sintomas de ansiedade, que será avaliado negativamente por outros. Situações sociais relevantes são evitadas de forma consistente ou suportadas com medo ou ansiedade intensos.
