A encefalopatia de Wernicke é uma síndrome neuropsiquiátrica aguda caracterizada por nistagmo, oftalmoplegia, alterações do estado mental, marcha descoordenada e ataxia troncular. A encefalopatia de Wernicke é geralmente acompanhada ou seguida pela síndrome de Korsakoff / demência de Korsakoff (um continuum da encefalopatia de Wernicke caracterizada por graves defeitos de memória, ataxia, apatia, desorientação, confabulações, alucinações, paralisia dos músculos que controlam o olho e coma). O distúrbio resulta de uma deficiência de vitamina B1 e ocorre principalmente em adultos com histórico de abuso de álcool ou em pacientes com AIDS. | |||

Wernicke's encephalopathy is usually accompanied or followed by Korsakoff's syndrome/Korsakoff's dementia (a continuum of Wernicke's encephalopathy characterised by severe memory defects, ataxia, apathy, disorientation, confabulations, hallucinations, paralysis of muscles controlling the eye and coma). The disorder results from a deficiency in vitamin B1, and mostly occurs in adults with a history of alcohol abuse or in patients with AIDS. | |||
