A xeroftalmia ou "olho seco" continua sendo a causa mais importante de cegueira infantil em muitos países em desenvolvimento. As sequelas s das doenças da córnea anterior relacionadas à deficiência de vitamina A incluem opacidades ou cicatrizes de densidade variável (nebulosa, mácula, leucoma), enfraquecimento e proteção das camadas restantes da córnea (estafiloma e descemetocele) e, onde ocorreu perda de conteúdo intraocular, phthisis bulbi, um globo encolhido com cicatrizes. Essas lesões em estágio final não são específicas para xeroftalmia e podem surgir de várias outras condições, principalmente trauma e infecção. | |||

Xerophthalmia or "dry eye" remains the most important cause of childhood blindness in many developing countries. Healed sequelae of prior corneal disease related to vitamin A deficiency include opacities or scars of varying density (nebula, macula, leukoma), weakening and outpouching of the remaining corneal layers (staphyloma and descemetocele) and, where loss of intraocular contents has occurred, phthisis bulbi, a scarred shrunken globe. Such end-stage lesions are not specific for xerophthalmia and may arise from numerous other conditions, notably trauma and infection. | |||

Healed sequelae of prior corneal disease related to vitamin A deficiency include opacities or scars of varying density (nebula, macula, leukoma), weakening and outpouching of the remaining corneal layers (staphyloma and descemetocele) and, where loss of intraocular contents has occurred, phthisis bulbi, a scarred shrunken globe. Such end-stage lesions are not specific for xerophthalmia and may arise from numerous other conditions, notably trauma and infection.
