A xerose conjuntival generalizada sugere deficiência avançada de vitamina A. Toda a conjuntiva parece seca, áspera e enrugada, às vezes com aparência de pele. Em alguns indivíduos, a queratina e os bacilos saprofíticos acumulam-se na superfície xerótica, conferindo-lhe uma aparência espumosa ou pastosa. Essas lesões são conhecidas como manchas de Bitot. Com o tratamento, a xerose conjuntival ativa e a mancha de Bitot começam a se resolver em 2 a 5 dias. A maioria desaparecerá em 2 semanas, embora uma parte significativa de lesões temporais possa persistir, na forma reduzida, por meses. | |||

In some individuals keratin and saprophytic bacilli accumulate on the xerotic surface, giving it a foamy or cheesy appearance. Such lesions are known as Bitot's spot. With treatment active conjunctival xerosis and Bitot's spot begin to resolve within 2-5 days. In some individuals keratin and saprophytic bacilli accumulate on the xerotic surface, giving it a foamy or cheesy appearance. Such lesions are known as Bitot's spot. With treatment active conjunctival xerosis and Bitot's spot begin to resolve within 2-5 days.
