Processo inflamatório do cérebro, frequentemente com evidência de envolvimento meníngeo, devido à infecção pelo vírus da caxumba. As manifestações clínicas são geralmente agudas, com febre e combinações variáveis de convulsões, estado mental prejudicado e déficits focais. O líquido cefalorraquidiano pode mostrar uma reação celular e proteína elevada. O diagnóstico é feito por neuroimagem, análise e cultura do líquido cefalorraquidiano, PCR e testes sorológicos.

An inflammatory process of the brain, frequently with evidence of meningeal involvement, due to infection by mumps virus. The clinical manifestations are usually acute, with fever and variable combinations of convulsions, impaired mental state, and focal deficits. The spinal fluid may show a cellular reaction and elevated protein. Diagnosis is by neuroimaging, spinal fluid analysis and culture, PCR, and serologic tests.
