Lesão e inflamação hepáticas agudas causadas por infecção recente e de curto prazo (menos de 6 meses) pelo vírus da hepatite C (HCV). A transmissão ocorre por contaminação de sangue e fluidos corporais (disseminação parenteral) na maioria dos casos, e raramente por disseminação sexual ou da mãe para o bebê no momento do nascimento (transmissão vertical). O diagnóstico é confirmado pela presença de anti-HCV de aquisição recente com presença de HCV RNA no soro. As manifestações clínicas ocorrem em uma minoria de casos e são caracterizadas por anorexia, náusea e febre, raramente com icterícia. Uma alta proporção de casos (>70%) desenvolve infecção VHC crônica, com doença hepática de gravidade variável.

Acute liver injury and inflammation caused by recent and short-term (less than 6 months) infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV). Transmission is by blood and body fluid contamination (parenteral spread) in most cases, and rarely by sexual spread or from mother to baby at the time of birth (vertical transmission). Diagnosis is confirmed by presence of recent acquisition of anti-HCV with presence of HCV RNA in serum. Clinical features occur in a minority of cases and are characterised by anorexia, nausea and fever, rarely with jaundice. A high proportion of cases (>70%) develop chronic HCV infection, with liver disease of varying severity.
