Afecção das meninges causada por uma infecção pela bactéria gram-negativa Neisseria meningitidis. Essa condição é caracterizada por febre alta, rigidez de nuca, cefaleia grave, vômito, púrpura, fotofobia e, às vezes, calafrios, alteração do estado mental ou convulsões. A transmissão ocorre através da disseminação hematogênica para as meninges após a transmissão por gotículas ou contato direto. A confirmação é feita pela identificação de Neisseria meningitidis no LCR (líquido cefalorraquidiano), por exemplo, por teste de aglutinação ou reação em cadeia da polimerase. | |||

This condition is characterised by high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, vomiting, purpura, photophobia, and sometimes chills, altered mental status, or seizures. Transmission is through haematogenous spread to the meninges after droplet transmission or direct contact. Confirmation is by identification of Neisseria meningitidis in CSF (cerebrospinal fluid), for example, by agglutination test or polymerase chain reaction. | |||
