A exoftalmia intermitente é uma síndrome rara, mas marcante e inconfundível. É caracterizada pela protrusão pronunciada e rápida – quase instantânea – de um olho quando a estase venosa é induzida pela inclinação da cabeça para frente; por abaixar a cabeça; por virar a cabeça com força; por hiperextensão do pescoço; por tosse; por expiração forçada, com ou sem compressão das narinas, e por pressão nas veias jugulares. A protrusão ocular desaparece imediatamente quando a cabeça está ereta e quando a congestão venosa induzida artificialmente é aliviada. | |||||||||||||||

It is characterized by pronounced and rapid—almost instantaneous—protrusion of one eye when venous stasis is induced by bending the head forward; by lowering the head; by turning the head forcibly; by hyperextension of the neck; by coughing; by forced expiration, with or without compression of the nostrils, and by pressure on the jugular veins. The ocular protrusion disappears immediately when the head is erect and when artificially induced venous congestion is relieved. | |||||||||||||||
