A cárie precoce da infância (CPI) é caracterizada pela presença de um ou mais dentes afetados por lesões cariosas graves ou com lesões pontuais brancas em dentes decíduos anteriores e posteriores, perda extraordinária de dentes devida à cárie ou superfícies dentárias restauradas em dentes afetados. A CPI é encontrada principalmente em crianças com menos de seis anos de idade. Estas crianças com CPI foram identificadas com um número alto de dentes afetados por doença progressiva.

Early childhood caries (ECC) is characterised by the presence of one or more teeth affected by severe carious lesions or with white spot lesions in anterior and posterior primary teeth, extraordinary loss of teeth due to caries, or filled tooth surfaces in affected teeth. ECC is mostly found in young children under the age of six. Those children with ECC have been shown to have a high number of teeth affected by progressive disease.
