Reports have identified patients who have been diagnosed with cancer around the time of, or following the diagnosis of motor neuron disease, and paraneoplastic mechanisms have been suggested. Subgroups of patients with MND and cancer include patients with anti-Hu antibodies, and patients with coincident breast cancer and pure upper motor neuron syndrome. In patients with ALS, the phenotype of those with and without cancer does not differ, and treatment of the cancer does not alter the clinical course of the ALS.
