The vitelline duct (or omphalomesenteric duct) is a long narrow tube connecting the yoke sac of the early fetus to the developing intestinal tract and normally closes by the 9th week of gestation. Failure to close leads to a fistula clinically recognised by meconium issuing from the umbilical of the newborn.
