Parathyroid tumours occur predominantly in middle aged and older adults, and the vast majority are benign. They may also occur in the setting of inherited tumour syndromes, including MEN1 and the hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumour syndrome. The elucidation of the genetic basis of these syndromes has provided fascinating insights into thyroid and parathyroid growth and differentiation during the multi step processes of neoplastic development and progression.
