Epilepsy of the newborn characterised by frequent brief seizures within the first few days of life. Onset may be as late as 3 months of age. Seizures typically remit spontaneously within 6 weeks. The ictal electroencephalogram shows initial diffuse flattening followed by bilateral spikes and sharp waves. The cause is an autosomal dominant channelopathy with mutations in the voltage-gated potassium channel genes KCNQ2 or KCNQ3.
