Benign symmetrical lipomatosis is an uncommon condition characterised by progressive symmetrical accumulation during adult life of adipose mass at the level of the head, neck and upper trunk . The condition occurs principally in males between 30 and 60 years of age. It is often associated with excessive alcohol consumption. Insulin resistance has also been described. Mitochondrial DNA mutations have been identified in some cases, mainly when familial symmetrical lipomatosis occurs in the context of familial multisystem disease.
