Excessive sweating may be due to neurological lesions involving any part of the sympathetic pathway from the brain to the nerve ending. It may be the presenting symptom but it is quite exceptional for this to occur as an isolated phenomenon in the absence of other neurological symptoms or signs. Such lesions may be within the central nervous system (cortex, basal ganglia or spinal cord), the sympathetic pathway and ganglia, or in the peripheral nerves.
