+A varíola bovina é causada por uma infecção por um ortopoxvírus. A doença humana é causada pela inoculação cutânea a partir de um hospedeiro infectado. A varíola bovina é endêmica na Europa entre pequenos roedores, principalmente ratos-do-campo e ratazanas-da-floresta. Após sete dias de incubação, ocorre uma doença febril sistêmica semelhante à gripe. As lesões são únicas ou em pequena quantidade, afetando principalmente a face e mãos. Uma pápula ou bolha eritematosa inicial forma posteriormente uma escara crostosa que cicatriza lentamente, deixando uma cicatriz profunda semelhante a uma pústula.

Lesions are solitary or few, mainly affecting the face and hands. An initial erythematous papula or blister later forms a crusted eschar which heals slowly leaving a deep pock-like scar.
