This is an inflammatory condition of the lung—affecting primarily the microscopic air sacs known as alveoli. This diagnosis is due to the obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia psittaci (also called Chlamydophila psittaci) that may cause endemic avian chlamydiosis, and respiratory psittacosis in humans. Infection is acquired by inhaling dried secretions from infected birds.
