Morte súbita inesperada na epilepsia (SUDEP) é uma categoria de morte em pessoas com epilepsia que ocorre em circunstâncias benignas e na ausência de causas estruturais conhecidas de morte (ou seja, não devido a afogamento, lesão, intoxicação e outros fatores internos ou externos). A evidência de uma crise epiléptica anterior pode estar presente ou não. Uma “SUDEP definitiva” é confirmada se um exame post-mortem não revelar uma causa alternativa de morte. Se tal exame não for feito, mas as causas potencialmente letais alternativas forem excluídas e todos os outros critérios forem preenchidos, a morte é rotulada como “SUDEP provável”. O termo “possível SUDEP” é usado em casos com causas de morte concorrentes ou quando os dados são insuficientes para permitir razoavelmente sua classificação. O termo “SUDEP plus” se aplica quando um paciente também sofria de outras doenças que podem ter contribuído para a morte, mas não há indícios de que a condição alternativa realmente a tenha causado. Evidence of a preceding seizure may be present or not. A “definite SUDEP” is confirmed if a postmortem examination does not reveal an alternative cause of death. If such examination lacks, but potentially lethal alternative causes are excluded and all other criteria are met, the death is labelled as “probable SUDEP”. The term “possible SUDEP” is used in cases with competing causes of death or when data are insufficient to reasonably allow their classification. The term “SUDEP plus” applies when a patient also suffered from other diseases that may have contributed to the death, but there are no clues that the alternative condition has truly caused it.
