+O rim em ferradura é a anomalia de fusão renal mais frequente e se caracteriza pela união dos polos inferiores dos dois rins por meio de um istmo. O rim em ferradura é, na verdade, mais uma anomalia anatômica do que uma doença, mas leva à predisposição a certas condições, como hidronefrose, nefrolitíase ou pielonefrite. Um terço dos indivíduos com rim em ferradura são assintomáticos, sendo a anomalia descoberta fortuitamente durante um exame radiológico. Anomalias urogenitais ou dos vasos renais podem estar associadas à condição. Para os casos que requerem tratamento, várias abordagens terapêuticas estão disponíveis e a escolha do tratamento depende da patologia associada.
