Anormalidades de desenvolvimento do sistema linfático que ocorrem em locais de conexão venoso-linfático, mais comumente na região posterior do pescoço, mas podem ser anteriores e se estender até o tórax. Frequentemente associada a anormalidades cariotípicas, várias síndromes de malformação e vários agentes teratogênicos. Quando diagnosticadas no pré-natal, o prognóstico geral é ruim. O higroma cístico diagnosticado após o nascimento usualmente está associado a um bom prognóstico.

Development abnormalities of the lymphoid system that occur at sites of lymphatic-venous connection, most commonly in the posterior neck but may be anterior and may extend into chest. Frequently associated with karyotypic abnormalities, various malformation syndromes, and several teratogenic agents. When diagnosed prenatally, the overall prognosis is poor. Cystic hygroma diagnosed after birth is usually associated with a good prognosis.
