+Gêmeos monozigóticos geralmente compartilham uma placenta. As anastomoses vasculares dentro da placenta permitem a transferência de sangue entre os dois fetos. Em alguns casos, o fluxo é desequilibrado e um feto (gêmeo maior, pletórico e policitêmico) tem uma sobrecarga de fluido, enquanto o outro (gêmeo hidrópico menor) torna-se anêmico.
