Acomete crianças com idades entre 4 meses e 2 anos, sendo meninos duas vezes mais afetados do que meninas. A dramática aparência clínica do edema facial e dos membros com múltiplas máculas purpúricas em alvo contrasta com seu curso geralmente benigno.
