+Acantose nigricans é caracterizada por pele escura, espessa e aveludada em dobras e vincos do corpo. É mais comumente encontrada em associação com obesidade e diabetes tipo 2, embora possa ser um componente de numerosas síndromes genéticas. Hiperinsulinemia e resistência à insulina são fatores subjacentes importantes. A acantose nigricans raramente pode ser causada por malignidade subjacente (acantose nigricans paraneoplásica).

It is most commonly encountered in association with obesity and type 2 diabetes though may be a component of a number of genetic syndromes. Hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance are important underlying factors. Acanthosis nigricans may rarely be due to underlying malignancy (paraneoplastic acanthosis nigricans).
