Acantose nigricans é caracterizada por pele escura, espessa e aveludada em dobras e vincos do corpo. É mais comumente encontrada em associação com obesidade e diabetes tipo 2, embora possa ser um componente de numerosas síndromes genéticas. Hiperinsulinemia e resistência à insulina são fatores subjacentes importantes. A acantose nigricans raramente pode ser causada por malignidade subjacente (acantose nigricans paraneoplásica).

Acanthosis nigricans is characterised by dark, thick, velvety skin in body folds and creases. It is most commonly encountered in association with obesity and type 2 diabetes though may be a component of a number of genetic syndromes. Hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance are important underlying factors. Acanthosis nigricans may rarely be due to underlying malignancy (paraneoplastic acanthosis nigricans).
