Na siringomielia, há cavitação tubular preenchida por líquido (formação de siringe) na medula espinal central. A siringe pode alongar, aumentar e expandir-se para a matéria cinzenta e branca e, ao fazer isso, comprime o tecido nervoso dos tratos corticoespinais e espinotalâmicos e as células do corno anterior. Isso leva a vários sinais e sintomas neurológicos. Se a siringe se estender até o tronco cerebral, resultará em siringobulbia. | |||||||||||||||

In syringomyelia, there is fluid-filled tubular cavitation (syrinx formation) within the central spinal cord. The syrinx can elongate, enlarge and expand into the grey and white matter and, as it does so, it compresses the nervous tissue of the corticospinal and spinothalamic tracts and the anterior horn cells. This leads to the various neurological symptoms and signs. If the syrinx extends into the brainstem, syringobulbia results. | |||||||||||||||
