A apneia central do sono com respiração de Cheyne-Stokes é caracterizada por apneias predominantemente centrais ou hipopneias centrais, recorrentes (mais de cinco por hora), que se alternam com uma fase respiratória que exibe um padrão de fluxo (ou de volume corrente) em crescendo-decrescendo. A duração mais longa do ciclo respiratório (> 40 segundos) distingue a apneia do sono central com respiração de Cheyne-Stokes de outros tipos de apneia do sono central. A grande maioria dos pacientes com apneia do sono central com respiração de Cheyne-Stokes têm insuficiência cardíaca sistólica ou diastólica. Pacientes com apneia do sono central com respiração de Cheyne-Stokes têm a pressão parcial de dióxido de carbono (PaCO2) diurna normal ou baixa.
