Apneia central do sono primária é de etiologia desconhecida (idiopática) e é caracterizada por apneias recorrentes, predominantemente centrais. O fluxo aéreo e o esforço respiratório cessam simultaneamente de modo repetitivo ao longo da noite. Os episódios recorrentes de apneia (mais de cinco por hora) e despertares associados são graves o suficiente para causar sintomas tais como sonolência diurna, sono agitado, despertar com dispneia, ou ronco. _x000D_ _x000D_ Nota: O diagnóstico definitivo requer evidência objetiva baseada em polissonografia.

Primary central sleep apnoea is of unknown etiology (idiopathic) and is characterised by recurrent, predominantly central apnoeas. Airflow and respiratory effort cease simultaneously in a repetitive fashion over the course of the night. The recurrent episodes of apnoea (more than five per hour) and associated arousals are sufficiently severe to cause symptoms such as daytime sleepiness, disturbed sleep, awakening with dyspnoea, or snoring. Note: A definitive diagnosis requires objective evidence based on polysomnography.
