Mutismo seletivo é caracterizado por seletividade consistente para falar, de modo que uma criança demonstra competência linguística adequada em situações sociais específicas, tipicamente em casa, mas, de forma consistente, fracassa para falar em outras, tipicamente na escola. O distúrbio dura pelo menos um mês, não é limitado ao primeiro mês de escola e é de gravidade suficiente para interferir com o desempenho educacional ou com a comunicação social. O fracasso para falar não se deve a uma falta de conhecimento ou desconforto em relação ao idioma falado que é necessário na situação social (p. ex.,o idioma falado na escola é diferente do idioma falado em casa). | |||||||||||||||
