Transtorno do desenvolvimento da linguagem é caracterizado por déficits persistentes na aquisição, compreensão, produção ou uso da linguagem (falada ou sinalizada), que surgem durante o período de desenvolvimento, tipicamente durante a primeira infância, e causam limitações significativas na habilidade do indivíduo de se comunicar. A habilidade do indivíduo para compreender, produzir ou usar a linguagem é marcantemente inferior ao que se esperaria dada a idade do indivíduo.
