Cleptomania é caracterizada por uma falha recorrente em controlar fortes impulsos para furtar objetos na ausência de um motivo aparente (p. ex., os objetos não são adquiridos para uso pessoal ou ganho monetário). Há uma sensação crescente de tensão ou excitação afetiva antes das ocasiões dos furtos e uma sensação de prazer, excitação, alívio ou gratificação durante e imediatamente após o ato de furtar. O comportamento não é mais bem explicado por deficiência intelectual, outro transtorno mental e comportamental ou intoxicação por substância.

Kleptomania is characterised by a recurrent failure to control strong impulses to steal objects in the absence of an apparent motive (e.g., objects are not acquired for personal use or monetary gain). There is an increasing sense of tension or affective arousal before instances of theft and a sense of pleasure, excitement, relief, or gratification during and immediately after the act of stealing. The behaviour is not better explained by intellectual impairment, another mental and behavioural disorder, or substance intoxication.
