Cleptomania é caracterizada por uma falha recorrente em controlar fortes impulsos para furtar objetos na ausência de um motivo aparente (p. ex., os objetos não são adquiridos para uso pessoal ou ganho monetário). Há uma sensação crescente de tensão ou excitação afetiva antes das ocasiões dos furtos e uma sensação de prazer, excitação, alívio ou gratificação durante e imediatamente após o ato de furtar.
