Intoxicação por nicotina é uma condição transitória clinicamente significativa, que se desenvolve durante ou logo após o consumo de nicotina, caracterizada por perturbações em consciência, cognição, percepção, afeto, comportamento ou coordenação. Essas perturbações são causadas pelos efeitos farmacológicos conhecidos da nicotina e sua intensidade está intimamente relacionada à quantidade de nicotina consumida. Têm duração limitada, e diminuem à medida que a nicotina é eliminada do corpo. A apresentação pode incluir inquietação, agitação psicomotora, ansiedade, suores frios, dor de cabeça, insônia, palpitações, parestesia, náusea ou vômitos, cólicas abdominais, confusão, sonhos bizarros, sensação de queimação na boca, e salivação. Em casos raros, ideação paranoide, alterações perceptivas, convulsões ou coma podem ocorrer. A intoxicação por nicotina ocorre mais comumente em pessoas que estão usando pela primeira vez (não tolerantes) ou entre aqueles usando doses maiores do que de costume. | |||||||||||||||

Nicotine intoxication is a clinically significant transient condition that develops during or shortly after the consumption of nicotine that is characterised by disturbances in consciousness, cognition, perception, affect, behaviour, or coordination. These disturbances are caused by the known pharmacological effects of nicotine and their intensity is closely related to the amount of nicotine consumed. They are time-limited and abate as nicotine is cleared from the body. Presenting features may include restlessness, psychomotor agitation, anxiety, cold sweats, headache, insomnia, palpitations, paresthesias, nausea or vomiting, abdominal cramps, confusion, bizarre dreams, burning sensations in the mouth, and salivation. In rare instances, paranoid ideation, perceptual disturbances, convulsions or coma may occur. Nicotine intoxication occurs more commonly in naïve (non-tolerant) users or among those taking higher than accustomed doses. | |||||||||||||||
