Dependência de sedativos, hipnóticos ou ansiolíticos é um transtorno de regulação do uso de sedativos que surge do uso repetido ou contínuo dessas substâncias. O elemento característico é um forte impulso interno para usar sedativos, hipnóticos ou ansiolíticos, que é manifestado por capacidade prejudicada de controlar o uso, aumento da prioridade dada ao uso em detrimento de outras atividades, e persistência do uso apesar de danos ou consequências negativas. Essas experiências são frequentemente acompanhadas de uma sensação subjetiva de urgência ou fissura para usar essas substâncias. These experiences are often accompanied by a subjective sensation of urge or craving to use these substances. Physiological features of dependence may also be present, including tolerance to the effects of sedatives, hypnotics or anxiolytics, withdrawal symptoms following cessation or reduction in use, or repeated use of sedatives or pharmacologically similar substances to prevent or alleviate withdrawal symptoms.
