É uma condição aguda na qual a diminuição da ventilação (hipoventilação) leva a um aumento da concentração de dióxido de carbono no sangue e diminuição do pH ( chamada acidose). O dióxido de carbono (CO2) é produzido continuamente à medida que as células do corpo respiram, e esse CO2 se acumulará rapidamente caso não seja adequadamente expulso/eliminado pelos pulmões através da ventilação alveolar. A hipoventilação alveolar, portanto, leva a um aumento da PaCO2 (chamada de hipercapnia). O aumento da PaCO2, por sua vez, reduz a relação HCO3/PaCO2, diminuindo assim o pH.

This is an acute condition in which decreased ventilation (hypoventilation) causes increased blood carbon dioxide concentration and decreased pH (a condition generally called acidosis). Carbon dioxide is produced continuously as the body's cells respire, and this CO2 will accumulate rapidly if the lungs do not adequately expel it through alveolar ventilation. Alveolar hypoventilation thus leads to an increased PaCO2 (called hypercapnia). The increase in PaCO2 in turn decreases the HCO3-/PaCO2 ratio and decreases pH.
