A sobrecarga de ferro é o acúmulo de ferro em excesso nos tecidos do corpo. A sobrecarga de ferro geralmente ocorre como resultado de uma predisposição genética para absorver e armazenar ferro em quantidades excessivas, sendo a forma mais comum a hemocromatose hereditária. A sobrecarga de ferro também pode ocorrer como complicação de outros distúrbios hematológicos que requerem terapia de transfusão crônica, injeções repetidas de ferro parenteral ou ingestão excessiva de ferro. Os estoques excessivos de ferro geralmente se acumulam nos tecidos reticuloendoteliais e causam poucos danos (“hemossiderose”). Se a sobrecarga continuar, o ferro eventualmente começa a se acumular em tecidos como parênquima hepático, pâncreas, coração e sinóvia, causando hemocromatose.

Iron overload is the accumulation of excess iron in body tissues. Iron overload usually occurs as a result of a genetic predisposition to absorb and store iron in excess amounts, the most common form of which is hereditary hemochromatosis. Iron overload can also occur as a complication of other hematologic disorders that require chronic transfusion therapy, repeated injections of parenteral iron, or excessive iron ingestion. Excessive iron stores usually accumulate in the reticuloendothelial tissues and cause little damage (“hemosiderosis”). If overload continues, iron eventually begins to accumulate in tissues such as hepatic parenchyma, pancreas, heart and synovium, causing hemochromatosis.
