Refere-se a uma deficiência da enzima presente em grande variedade de organismos, incluindo plantas e animais. Esta deficiência ocorre em quatro classes distintas de enzimas. Duas delas são enzimas dependentes do citocromo C, cada uma agindo no D-lactato (EC 1.1.2.4) ou no L-lactato (EC 1.1.2.3).
