Os pacientes que recebem nutrição parenteral de longo prazo apresentam risco aumentado de toxicidade por alumínio devido ao desvio do trato gastrointestinal durante a infusão de nutrição parenteral. As complicações da toxicidade do alumínio incluem doença óssea metabólica, encefalopatia associada ao alumínio em adultos e comprometimento do desenvolvimento neurológico em bebês prematuros.
