O sobrepeso é uma condição caracterizada por adiposidade excessiva. O sobrepeso é avaliado pelo índice de massa corporal (IMC), que é um marcador substituto da adiposidade calculado como peso (kg)/altura² (m²). Em bebês, crianças e adolescentes, as categorias de IMC para definir o excesso de peso variam por idade e sexo, com base nos gráficos de crescimento da OMS. Crianças de 0 a 5 anos estão acima do peso se o peso para altura ou IMC para idade for maior que 2 e menor ou igual a 3 desvios-padrão da mediana dos Padrões de Crescimento Infantil da OMS.
