A síndrome de hipoventilação da obesidade é caracterizada por obesidade (em adultos, índice da massa corpórea > 30 kg/m²) e hipercapnia diurna indicada por pressão parcial arterial de dióxido de carbono (PaCO2)> 45 mm Hg que não pode ser totalmente atribuída a uma doença cardiopulmonar ou neurológica subjacente. A hipercapnia piora durante o sono e geralmente está associada a grave dessaturação arterial de oxigênio. Hypercapnia worsens during sleep and is often associated with severe arterial oxygen desaturation. Obstructive sleep apnoea is also present in the majority of cases and should be diagnosed in addition to obesity hypoventilation.
