+Achados clínicos da deficiência grave de zinco em humanos são retardo do crescimento, atraso sexual e maturação óssea, lesões cutâneas, diarreia, alopecia, diminuição do apetite , aumento da suscetibilidade a infecções por defeitos nas vias do sistema imune, e o aparecimento de mudanças comportamentais. Os efeitos da deficiência de zinco leve a moderado são menos claros. Uma redução da taxa de crescimento e deficiências na defesa imunológica são, até agora, os únicos sinais claramente demonstrados de deficiência leve de zinco em humanos. Outros efeitos, como paladar e cicatrização de feridas prejudicados , que possivelmente resultam de uma baixa ingestão de zinco, são observados de forma menos consistente.

The effects of marginal or mild zinc deficiency are less clear. A reduced growth rate and impairments of immune defence are so far the only clearly demonstrated signs of mild zinc deficiency in humans. Other effects, such as impaired taste and wound healing, which have been claimed to result from a low zinc intake, are less consistently observed.
