+O vegetarianismo e o quase vegetarianismo imposto pela pobreza são as causas mais comuns de insuficiência nutricional de cobalamina em todo o mundo e em todas as faixas etárias. Em tais populações, o baixo status de cobalamina materna está associado a resultados adversos na gravidez (parto prematuro, retardo de crescimento intrauterino, aborto espontâneo precoce), defeitos do tubo neural, desempenho neurocognitivo reduzido em crianças, remodelação óssea acelerada e baixa densidade mineral óssea com fraturas. A ingestão insuficiente de cobalamina também é observada em bebês amamentados por mães com anemia perniciosa.
