Vários transtornos intestinais podem causar deficiência de vitamina B12 (cobalamina). Estes incluem doenças pancreáticas graves e doenças do intestino delgado como má absorção, doença ileal ( incluindo ileíte tuberculosa, linfoma, amilóide, sobreviventes de irradiação pélvica), ressecção extensa do intestino delgado ou bypass, cirurgia gástrica/reconstrução para obesidade (cirurgia bariátrica) e doença de Crohn. Quando as alças cegas jejunais estão presentes, o supercrescimento bacteriano dentro das alças compete pela cobalamina, levando a deficiência de cobalamina. Embora não seja tão comum atualmente, a infestação pela tênia do peixe, Diphyllobothrium latum, já foi uma causa clássica de deficiência de cobalamina. | |||||||||||||||

These include severe pancreatic diseases and small bowel diseases such as malabsorption, ileal disease (including tuberculous ileitis, lymphoma, amyloid, long-term survivors of pelvic irradiation), extensive small bowel resection or bypass, gastric surgery/reconstruction for obesity (bariatric surgery) and Crohn's disease. When jejunal blind loops are present, bacterial overgrowth within the loops competes for cobalamin, leading to cobalamin deficiency. Although not as common currently, infestation with the fish tapeworm, Diphyllobothrium latum, was once a classic cause of cobalamin deficiency. | |||||||||||||||
