O fenômeno tem sido associado a imunossupressão, particularmente em indivíduos que realizaram transplante renal e em indivíduos que estão recebendo quimioterapia contra câncer, e pode ser considerado uma contraparte mais avançada de lentiginose eruptiva generalizada.
