Essas condições são caracterizadas pela presença de nódulos subcutâneos firmes cheios de vermes adultos, prurido, inflamação de longa duração da córnea (ceratite) ou espessamento do estroma da córnea. Se não forem tratadas, essas infecções podem levar à cegueira. A transmissão ocorre por meio da picada de uma mosca Simulium infectada.
