Rubéola era uma infecção viral comum na infância até o advento dos programas de imunização em massa. É caracterizada por exantema maculopapular de curta duração, linfadenopatia e febre leve: a maioria das infecções não está associada a morbidade significativa. A transmissão ocorre por inalação de secreções respiratórias infectadas ou por contato direto. A confirmação é feita pela identificação do vírus da rubéola em esfregaço nasal, esfregaço da garganta ou amostras de sangue, ou pela detecção de anticorpos IgM específicos contra o vírus da rubéola. Sua importância para a saúde pública reside em seu potencial de causar danos devastadores ao feto de uma mãe infectada (síndrome da rubéola congênita).

Rubella was a common childhood viral infection until the advent of mass immunization programmes. It is characterised by a short-lived maculopapular exanthem, lymphadenopathy and mild fever: the majority of infections are not associated with significant morbidity. Transmission is by inhalation of infected respiratory secretions or by direct contact. Confirmation is by identification of rubella virus in nasal swab, throat swab or blood samples, or by detection of rubella virus specific IgM antibodies. Its public health importance lies in its potential to cause devastating harm to the fetus of an infected mother (congenital rubella syndrome).
