Sífilis endêmica não venérea é causada por subespécie endêmica do Treponema pallidum e é transmitida por contato pele a pele ou boca a boca, e não por contato sexual. As crianças correm maior risco de infecção. As características clínicas são semelhantes à sífilis venérea com uma úlcera primária (usualmente na boca ou nos mamilos de mulheres que amamentam crianças infectadas) e, no estágio secundário, uma erupção papular generalizada, manchas na mucosa oral, condiloma plano e linfadenopatia generalizada . A infecção em estágio avançado é caracterizada por gomas destrutivas de nasofaringe (gangosa), ossos e pele. | |||||||||||||||

Endemic non-venereal syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies endemicum and is transmitted by skin-to-skin or mouth-to-mouth contact rather than sexual contact. Children are at greatest risk of infection. Clinical features are similar to venereal syphilis with a primary ulcer (usually in the mouth or on the nipples of breast-feeding women nursing infected children) and, in the secondary stage, a generalised papular rash, oral mucous patches, condylomata lata and generalised lymphadenopathy. Late stage infection is characterised by destructive gummata of the nasopharynx (gangosa), bones and skin. | |||||||||||||||
