A classificação ISO 9999:2016 dos dispositivos técnicos de auxílio define-os como "qualquer produto, instrumento, equipamento, ou sistema técnico utilizado por uma pessoa incapacitada, especialmente produzido ou geralmente disponível, que evite, compense, monitores, alivie ou neutraliza a incapacidade". For the purposes of this classification of environmental factors, however, assistive products and technology are defined more narrowly as any product, instrument, equipment or technology adapted or specially designed for improving the functioning of a person with a health condition.
