Dor crônica pode ocorrer na polineuropatia distal sensitiva na infecção por HIV. Polineuropatia pode se desenvolver tanto como um efeito primário da infecção pelo HIV quanto como um efeito adverso da terapia antirretroviral (TARV). Dor pode ser o sintoma inicial de uma neuropatia ou se desenvolver durante o curso da doença. A dor pode ser espontânea (contínua ou paroxística) ou, menos frequentemente, evocada, como uma resposta aumentada a um estímulo doloroso (hiperalgesia) ou uma resposta dolorosa a um estímulo normalmente não doloroso (alodinia). Sinais ou sintomas sensoriais negativos e positivos devem ser compatíveis com o padrão de distribuição anatômica da polineuropatia.

Chronic pain may occur in distal sensory polyneuropathy in HIV infection. Polyneuropathy may develop either as a primary effect of HIV infection or as an adverse effect of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Pain may be the initial symptom of a neuropathy or develop over the course of the disease. The pain may be spontaneous (ongoing or paroxysmal) or less frequently evoked, as an increased response to a painful stimulus (hyperalgesia) or a painful response to a normally nonpainful stimulus (allodynia). Negative and positive sensory symptoms or signs must be compatible with the anatomical distribution pattern of the polyneuropathy.
