O contato direto entre carne infectada com a bactéria Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae e a pele humana traumatizada resulta em erisipeloide, que mais comumente se apresenta como uma infecção localizada da pele traumatizada. As lesões afetam mais comumente as mãos, principalmente as regiões interdigitais; no entanto, qualquer área exposta do corpo pode ser afetada. As lesões consistem em placas bem demarcadas, vermelho vivo a púrpura, quentes e sensíveis, com uma superfície lisa e brilhante. Elas deixam uma descoloração acastanhada na pele ao se resolver.
