This is an inflammatory condition of the lung—affecting primarily the microscopic air sacs known as alveoli, in a parasitic disease caused by several species of trematodes (platyhelminth infection, or "flukes"), a parasitic worm of the genus Schistosoma. This diagnosis is due to a significant parasite of humans, a trematode that is one of the major agents of the disease schistosomiasis. With schistosomiasis mansoni, eggs may bypass the liver through portosystemic collateral vessels and cause pulmonary disease.
