Chronic atheromatous arterial occlusive disease manifest as ischaemic pain brought on by exercise but relieved by rest. Symptoms are usually most prominent in the calf but the thigh or buttock may also be affected. If the arterial supply is further compromised pain does not subside with rest, signifying a risk of progression to critical ischaemia.
