+Os efeitos neuropsiquiátricos reportados da deficiência de folato são marcadamente semelhantes aqueles descritos para deficiência de vitamina B12, embora o metabolismo da vitamina B12 e ácido fólico sejam diferentes. Os pacientes com complicações neuropsiquiátricas por deficiência de folato apresentam-se sem anemia ou macrocitose em relação aos com deficiência de vitamina B12. A causa da deficiência de folato tem sido atribuída de várias maneiras à dieta pobre, doença crônica, uso de drogas (por exemplo, barbitúricos, álcool), má absorção, aumento da demanda, síndromes genéticas raras e específicas ou a causa desconhecida.
